Lepidoptera – Moths

Moths have been around for about 150 million years. There are more than 110,000 species and they are responsible for pollinating the majority of our plants. Each moth is given a number, known as the Hodges number. This system came about in 1983.

Caterpillars are host specific meaning that particular types or type of plant is a must for them to survive. Caterpillars have 13 segments and 5 pairs of prolegs. If you find one with more than 5 prolegs, it could be a sawfly. Caterpillars grow by molting and will molt 5 times with some surprising and interesting variety in their appearance after a molt. The change from a caterpillar to a moth is remarkable; inside the cocoon the caterpillar turns to a liquid goo and all the parts reform – truly an amazing aspect of nature!

Fifty-five percent of overwintering moths are in their pupae form. For the other 45%, but the best source for most of this info is BugGuide.net; this website will also provide many other resources from research papers to books.

I’ve tried to make this simple. You can go straight to the families and look at all the pictures of the different moths I have photographed under that family. From those photos, you’ll be able to click on the caption and go to the individual species’ page for further info. The families and the moths within each family are listed alphabetically by their common name; again, for ease of use.

I have done my best to make these IDs correctly but if I’ve made a mistake, please let me know! Many thanks for the help I’ve received from folks at BugGuide, Moth Photographers Group, several Facebook groups and a couple of good friends! All the info that I have provided came from this list of references.
