Edible; In season from late May to October. An average puffball can contain 7 trillion spores.
Calvatis gigantea is in the order Basidiomycota and Division of Gasteromycetes (Stomach Fungi). Stomach Fungi garner their common name because their spores are produced inside of their fruiting bodies. Because of this, the spores are not discharged but dispersed by external elements, such as wind or rain. Giant puff balls can produce up to 20 trillion spores!
