AKA Striate Bird’s Nest, Earthstars
These cute little ‘shrooms were growing at the base of our Serviceberry bushes. Each “egg” contains thousands of spores. Raindrops or perhaps any direct disturbance causes these “eggs” to explode, sending the spores to their new destination.
See Mushroom Expert for more info.
Conocybe tenera is in the order Basidiomycota and division of Gasteromycetes (Stomach Fungi). Stomach Fungi garner their common name because their spores are produced inside of their fruiting bodies. Because of this, the spores are not discharged but dispersed by external elements, such as wind or rain.
