Driftless Prairies: Native Habitat Restoration

Nature inspires awe!

Lucanidae (Stag Beetles)

These beetles are similar to Scarabs. Many spend their days beneath or in dead and decaying logs and then fly at dusk to lights. Some beetles of this family will eat the fluid from lesions of leaves or bark. There are 1,050 species in the world; only five are known to be in Wisconsin. Little is known about the biology and ecology of adults.
