Nature inspires awe!

Bombyliidae (Bee Flies)

The family of bee flies are known for having the largest number of species with the longest tongues although they have species with both long tongues and short tongues. These tongues are used just like we use straws. They are for getting deep into the flower for the nectar and pollen.

Bee flies love the sun and have short adult lives. Females will fly close to the ground looking for a prime place to lay their eggs. The preference of many of them are in or near solitary bee nests. Interestingly, these flies have evolved 2 larval stages, one is tiny and wormlike where it crawls along until it finds the cell of a bee larva. The other is maggot like and it’s this stage that attacks the cell.
