Driftless Prairies: Native Habitat Restoration

Nature inspires awe!

Heleomyzidae (Wombat and Cave Flies)

There are 700 species in this family and they are extremely diverse. There doesn’t seem to be any obvious features that would unify the species to this family.

Flies in this family are normally encountered in cold, dark places. In spring and early fall, they will hang out in caves, birds’ nests, dung, or decomposing material. Sadly, the larvae of this family are unknown.
