Driftless Prairies: Native Habitat Restoration

Nature inspires awe!

Mycetophilidae (Fungus Gnats)

There are about 4,000 species worldwide and an estimated 8,000 cued up for formal descriptions and naming. Many species of this family are specific to certain types of fungi; there are several species found on flowers and could be major pollinators. Although they are called gnats, it would be more accurate to refer to them as midges.
