Driftless Prairies: Native Habitat Restoration

Nature inspires awe!

Hemiptera – True Bugs, Cicadas, Hoppers, Aphids & Allies

Hemiptera are called True Bugs and although we use the term “bug” to refer to most any insect, its proper use is for a group of insects that have syringe-like beaks, which are used to suck the liquified insides from their prey.

This study found that the impact of elk has a positive relationship with Hemiptera species richness; Hemiptera density increases as the time since the last burn increases, and species diversity and evenness decrease as time since burn increases; sites with a burn frequency of four burns per decade showed the highest species diversity. (Effects of Grazing and Burning on Biodiversity of Hemiptera at Prairie State Park, MO)

These are arranged alphabetically by family and then by species within the family. This is for ease of use. The information I have gathered on the Hemiptera have come from the references on this page. I have taken care in making the ID’s but please, if there is anything wrong, let me know! All the photos have been taken by me.
