Driftless Prairies: Native Habitat Restoration

Nature inspires awe!

Notonectidae (Backswimmers)

They derive their family name because they swim on their backs. These water bugs are voracious predators and will give you a sharp bite that feels much like a bee sting. There are three common genera of this family in the United States. Most of the backswimmers overwinter as adults beneath iced over areas in the northern regions.
