Driftless Prairies: Native Habitat Restoration

Nature inspires awe!

Lycaenidae (Blues, Coppers, Hairstreaks, Harvesters, and Metalmarks)

Lycanenidae are also called gossamer-winged butterflies. One way of identifying the male from the female by their front leg; the female as normal legs and the males are smaller.

Blues are some of the first insects seen in spring.

Caterpillars from this diverse family of butterflies have developed the ability to secrete pheromones similar to ant larvae. In this way, the ants not only escort them to their safe nest they will feed the caterpillar throughout the winter. Pretty nice set-up!!
