Driftless Prairies: Native Habitat Restoration

Nature inspires awe!

Erebidae (Tiger, Lichen, Underwing, Litter, and Snout Moths)

Tiger Moth caterpillars have very thick hair and will overwinter beneath the leaf litter, although some will overwinter as pupae. Many Tiger Moths can make sound – a clicking noise. The females are attracted to males that are heavily perfumed with defensive alkaloids. Mating in Tiger moths can take up to 8 hours so this additional defense increases the chances of successful mating. This defensive chemical is also transferred to the eggs so they have a better chance of reaching “caterpillarhood.”
