Driftless Prairies: Native Habitat Restoration

Nature inspires awe!

Pyralidae (Grass and Lawnmower Moths)

This is a very diverse family with most of the moths being quite small; they are about 1400 known species in North America. They aren’t considered day-flying although when disturbed they will fly but once they are out of danger, they will settle in until night.

The larvae of these moths are known to be quite tasty. According to “The Original Guide to Insect Cookery,” when dropped into hot oil, they puff up like popcorn and taste like potato chips or corn puffs.
