Driftless Prairies: Native Habitat Restoration

Nature inspires awe!

Gryllidae (True Crickets)

Crickets are considered the short-horned Orthoptera. I never thought of insects as being right-handed or left handed, but apparently they are. Crickets are right-handed, meaning they sing by rubbing the right wing over the left. Most of their singing is for mating purposes, but crickets have songs for aggression, defense, and territoriality. This family is mostly nocturnal.

Unlike the Field Crickets and the House Crickets, Tree Crickets are very beneficial insects; they eat aphids and other small insects.
