Driftless Prairies: Native Habitat Restoration

Nature inspires awe!

Mantidae (Mantids)

Mantis religiosa – European Praying Mantis

This guy showed up one night when we were doing a black light shoot. I had gone into the house to download photos I’d just taken. I’m constantly scanning the windows from the inside to see what shows up and imagine my thrill when I could see this HUGE praying mantis! We estimated he was 5-6” long.

Although he is non-native, mantids are very helpful with certain types of insect control such as gypsy moth caterpillars and aphids. They do feast on other insects as they are carnivores and successful predators. They hunt by camouflaging themselves among plants and ambushing their prey.
