Eastern Cottontail Rabbit
The most common rabbit. It is primarily nocturnal and can leap 10-15 feet. When pursued, they will jump sideways to break the scent trail. In winter, they will live in Woodchuck burrows. They eat plants in summer and woody varieties in winter. Rabbit’s digestive tracts aren’t as efficient in the winter as they are in the summer. To supplement that, they will defecate soft green pellets in their shelter, which they will eat at leisure. These pellets help them to garner all the possible nutrition from their diets. If no deaths occurred, a pair of rabbits could produce 350,000 rabbits in 5 years as they breed from Feb – Sept. Although prolific, few live longer than 1 year.
